What To Do

The state of New Jersey’s Cliffdale Manor is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Located just off the Palisades Interstate Parkway in Alpine, Bergen County, the manor is a short half-mile hike from the top of Alpine Lookout. Views of Yonkers and the surrounding area can be seen from this lookout, which is marked by a green blaze. Although the trail can be challenging at times due to fallen trees and rocks, it is generally flat and smooth.

If you have never visited CliffDale Manor, you can get an idea of the mansion’s rich history in this historic park. Originally, the mansion was meant to be demolished, but the ruins of the historic structure are still visible today. The ruins contain parts of the mansion’s gardens and stairways that lead nowhere. This site is part of the Jersey Through History series.

Attractions

The historic Cliffdale Manor used to have fifteen rooms. The upper floors were demolished, but the bones are still there today. Visiting the ruins is a fun day trip and a good place to see birds. The ruins are also located near the New York City skyline, making them a popular spot for birdwatching. While you’re there, you should consider visiting the Women’s Federation Monument as well.

The manor was built in 1911 by George Albert Zabriskie. Though his ancestors had settled in the colonial states in 1662, the wealthy businessman decided to build his own summer home in Bergen County, New Jersey. He purchased 25 acres of land from the estate of William C. Baker, a prominent inventor of artificial incubation for chicken eggs. Zabriskie added an extensive man-made pond south of the manor, as well as gardens on the Hudson side.
