Historic site of Continental Congressman John Fell
The Historic site of Continental Congressman John Fell’s house in Allendale, New Jersey, honors this eminent American. In 1768, Fell bought a 220-acre tract of land in Allendale and named it “Petersfield.” The township is also named for Fell’s son, Peter, who served as a lieutenant colonel of the Bergen County militia during the Revolution.
The building dates from the 1760s, when John Fell built the original portion. His addition, built in the 1830s, was finished in 1915. The property includes an adjacent Gothic Revival barn and wetlands. The original house also has a porch that was enclosed during the nineteenth century. It’s open to the public year-round. Its current owner is the Concerned Citizens of Allendale, which manages it as an educational resource.
